Wastewater Treatment in Agriculture

Wastewater originating from agricultural processes is usually not contaminated with mineral elements, but instead primarily with significant loads of organic substances such as starches, sugar or cellulose.

Wastewater from Livestock

Wastewater is also produced by livestock. Pig slurry, for example, can be fermented in suitable biogas plants. The resulting biomethane can be used to generate heat and power for the farm’s own needs. The digestate is used instead of liquid manure as organic fertiliser on the farm land.

Dairy Farming and Silage Leachates

In dairy farming, large quantities of water are consumed each day to clean the milking clusters and parlours. This wastewater must be treated before it returns to the water cycle. Of course, the treated wastewater can also be reused for cleaning purposes.

Silage leachate can also cause problems on some farms. It may also drip onto transport infrastructure during transport. These residues may mix with rain or melt water and significantly contaminate surface waters. Silage leachate should be contained and purified due to its high content of organic substances.

Fruit and Plant Production

In the plant production sector, wastewater is produced primarily where products are cleaned and processed. As an example, today it is common to wash potatoes before bagging. Vegetables or fruit, such as apples, are also often washed before being packaged for sale. This results in wastewater, which requires treatment.

Water is also essential for fruit harvesting and processing. As an example, up to five cubic metres of water are required to process one ton of potatoes. To reduce costs, water in many agricultural processing plants is increasingly recirculated in a loop. Impurities are expelled and the water is reprocessed for reuse.

DAS Environmental Expert GmbH offers its customers a wide range of processes suitable for purifying agricultural wastewater. These solutions should be a good match for the customer’s operations while effectively and efficiently purifying the wastewater produced, all while taking up as little space as possible.
